DNBSpace Interview with DJ Vengeance July '07'

www.myspace.com/djvengeance

Before D&B what did you listen to?
Rave Music

Who were your musical influences outside of D&B?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from Heavy Metal Music as it has a combination of power & melody.

How did you get involved in the D&B scene, and how did the name Vengeance come about?
The Radio 1 Show One in the Jungle, which was hosted by MC Det was when I really began getting into jungle, as I think a lot of people did. I just go more into the scene from there, buying tape packs etc. I then took the next step and brought some Decks and began collecting tunes. My Original DJ name was B-Rone. When I started producing I needed a name with more of a hook to it that you remembered, so I thought of Vengeance as an alias that I could produce under and it just stuck.

Who are your favourite Dj's & Mc's in the scene right now?
Andy C & Friction are tight power mixers and I've always Liked Mampi Swift's Style he is a Great Showman.
Mc Wise has to be Skibba dee as he is so versatile and is an innovator in the scene. Also Watch out for MC TNT, Dynamite MC Ready to Blow up [www.myspace.com/thetntmc]

What makes a good Drum & Bass Dj in your opinion?
Combination of Skillz, of course Tight mixing is 1st and for most. But another important trait is the wow factor or X-factor. Which Swift brings to his sets, by not keeping to that formal of inta - outa mixing. Spicing it up with Skillz such as double dropping and teasing in classic anthems to get the crowd buzzing. Keeping the audience on there toes is key IMO

Where do you see D&B in 2010?
I think Drum & Bass will feature in the mainstream charts a lot more which is a Good thing IMO as it will introduces the Underground scene to a lot more people. In the future I see a lot more Live Bands getting the DNB relick. Like films getting Computer game tie ins.

Drum n Bass is dead – What do you make of this statement?
People are always saying this, Drum n Bass is dead LOL it will never die its hear to stay in 1 form or another. As with all music genres that are produced, elements can always be found in other musically genres.

What was the last vinyl you bought?
Artificial intelligence - Bloodlines - widescreen

You deliver some heavy sounding tracks. What are the tools of the trade when producing?
I use Reason Rewired into Cubase with a desk and a couple of compressors. For a detailed list of equipment used visit this link:

You play the drums, do you play any other instruments?
I can jam on the bass and can play a little bit of guitar.

When making a track do you start with a plan or roll with what sounds good at the time?
I always start with the drums making a loop and adding a basic note structure, I then sketch out a basic tune much like how an artist paints a picture. When I'm happy with the foundation to work on I start filling the tune out with colour adding highlights and dark shade, if you know what I mean.

Anyone in particular you'd like to collaborate with in future?
Dj Fresh

Any advice or tips you can pass on to new producers?
Think in the Future! Make DJ friendly tunes, Go to events see what works on the Dancefloor and get inspired to make Good Dance music.

Your very busy with radio shows etc but finding time to run Knights of the underground. Whats the main concept of this?
Knights of the Underground Are a Group of MC's & DJ's from the East of England Representing the Very Best in Drum & Bass Music. The main Reason for setting up this project to promote Talented DJ's/MC's With a view to getting these artists exposure and hopefully led to Bookings. This Project is at an early stage, but if The Knights are successful I want to turn it into an agency for Drum & Bass Artists. We are looking to Recruit Artists to fly under our banner, however the calibre of the DJs & MCs we represent is very high. We will find you! Check out www.myspace.com/undergroundknights
